Archie Search Engine

What is Archie?

Archie was developed to provide information for distributed computers. FTP, or File Transfer Protocol (FTP), was the protocol used to link computers in American universities during the 1980s. Users were reliant upon word-of-mouth to locate what they needed. Alan Emtage Peter Deutsch Bill Heelan created a searchable database to make it easier for users to find the files they wanted.

Emtage, Heelan, and Deutsch wrote this search script at McGill University Montreal Canada in September 1990. It was released by way of a computer program that downloaded anonymous directory listings from FTP sites. A database of file name names could then be searched.

The name Archie is derived from the word "archive", but it's not connected to any popular comic character. It is still often associated with comics.

What is archie internet?

The archie Internet is a global network of servers which stores all the data from archie searches. These servers may be located anywhere in the world.

These servers process 50,000 queries a day from a few thousand users worldwide and are based on a global collection of archie server replicas that replicate an ever-evolving 150 MB database of 2.1 million records. The servers are able to respond to simple queries within seconds on Saturday nights, but they can take anywhere from 5 minutes to several hours during weekday afternoons.

What is an archie FTP search?

Archie ftp searches are online searches that use an FTPS client (File Transfer Protocol), which sends requests to a server for a specific file or directory. The server will return to the client the matching file or directory. The client will then search the returned file to see if the file matches the directory requested.

The filename, or directory, is added to Archie's database when a search has been completed. A search result will be output. The result shows the filename as well as the file that matched and links to its FTP. The result can be used as a starting point for other searches.

How to search archie using ftp

Install Archie on the local computer in order to perform an archie FTP search. It is necessary to have an internet connection that allows you to connect to the server.

The Archie client will ask you for the pathname to the archie server on which you want to run the script. The client will instruct the script on when to terminate and stop waiting for the response from the archie server. The archie script can then perform the search as quickly and efficiently as possible, saving you time by not waiting for results.

The Archie database data is stored as a FORM associated array. A subroutine called parse_archie_fields uses this as a searching format. The server name and IP address stored in FORM associative will be decoded. The query field can be found in a variable named query. This variable is retrievable by the program.

After you have learned how to structure a website, you will need to know HTML and CSS.

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. Think of it like writing a recipe for a dish. You'd list the ingredients, instructions, along with directions. It is the language used to describe documents.

CSS stands for Cascading Style sheets. You can think of CSS as a style sheet for recipes. Instead of listing each ingredient and instructing, you can write down general guidelines for font sizes, colors and spacing.

HTML tells the browser how to format a web page; CSS tells it how to do it.

  • Shared hosting – This is the most affordable option. Your website files reside on a server owned by someone else. Your customers' requests travel via the Internet to your server when they visit your site. The server owner then forwards the request to you.
  • Dedicated hosting is the most expensive option. Your website is only accessible from one server. Your traffic stays private as no other websites can share the same server.

Shared hosting is preferred by most businesses because it's cheaper than dedicated hosting. The company hosting the server will provide the resources necessary to manage your website.

But there are pros and cons to both options. These are some of the major differences between them.

Shared Hosting Pros

  1. Lower Cost
  2. Easy to Setup
  3. Frequent Updates

Shared hosting can often cost as little as $10/month. Remember that shared hosting usually comes with bandwidth. Bandwidth refers to the amount of data you can transfer across the Internet. Even if you upload only photos to your blog you might still have to pay more for large amounts of data that you transfer through your account.

Once you start, you'll quickly realize why you were paying so much for your previous host. The majority of shared hosts offer limited customer support. Their techs will occasionally walk you through setting up your site, but you're on your own after that.

It is important to find a provider that provides 24-hour support. They will take care of any issues while you sleep.

Cons of dedicated hosting

  1. More Expensive
  2. Less Common
  3. Specific Skills Required

With dedicated hosting, you get everything you need to run your website. You won’t need to worry whether you have enough bandwidth or enough RAM (random address memory).

This means that you'll spend a bit more upfront. Once you get started with your online business, you will find that you don't require much technical support. You will become an expert in managing your servers.

Which is better for my business?

The answer depends on what kind of website you want to create. If you only want to sell products, then shared hosting might be the best choice. It is easy to set-up and manage. It's easy to set up and maintain, as you share a server with other sites. You will likely be updated frequently.

If you want to create a community around a brand, dedicated hosting may be the best choice. You can focus on building your brand without worrying about handling your traffic.
